VALDOSTA, Ga. – Blake Hobby limited Valdosta State to just four hits in eight innings of work to lead No. 35 North Georgia to a 8-3 victory in the second day of play at the Comfort Suites Classic at Billy Grant Field Saturday evening.
North Georgia (1-1) opened the scoring in the top of the first inning when leadoff man Jordan Erisman singled and moved to second on sacrifice bunt. After a walk to Terrell Jones, Kenny Bellavance singled to right to plate Erisman for a 1-0 Saints lead.
Valdosta State(1-1) left the bases loaded in the bottom of the first and had a runner on third with one outs in the third, but failed to score while the Saints pushed their advantage to 2-0 in the second when Eason Spivey laced a two-out double off the glove of VSU third baseman Austin Lawrence to plate Andrew Gordon.
After collecting its first hit of the game with one out in the fifth inning, VSU finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Christian Glisson led off the Blazer half of the sixth with a triple to center and scored as Cameron Graves followed with a ground out to cut the VSU deficit to 2-1.
NGCSU got five more runs in the top of the seventh and its final run in the top of the ninth while Valdosta State collected three singles to load the bases and scored on a pair of wild pitches by North Georgia reliever Reese Patton
Hobby gave up two more hits in the eighth inning and walked three while striking out one. Erisman, Bellavance, Gordon and Dustin Carpenter each tallied two hits as the Saints tallied 12 hits in the game.
Valdosta State starter Pete Whittingslow took the loss after allowing six hits and two runs while striking out 10 batters in 5.2 innings on the mound. Zachary Rios, who tallied the first hit of the day off of Hobby, also singled in the ninth for two of VSU's six hits in the game.
Valdosta State concludes the Comfort Suites Classic when it hosts Saint Leo at 2:00 p.m. at Billy Grant Field.
