ROME, Ga. - West Florida exploded for seven runs in the second inning as it defeated Valdosta State 10-0 in an elimination game at the Gulf South Conference Tournament Sunday afternoon at State Mutual Stadium.
The win improved West Florida's record to 37-13 while Valdosta State fell to 27-19.
West Florida got five hits and took advantage of a pair of Valdosta State errors in the outfield to take a 7-0 lead in the second inning. Josh Huggins and Max St. Hilaire each singled to open the inning before Korey Domenick drew a walk to load the bases. Blake Barber followed with a fielder's choice that scored Huggins before Leo Lamarche singled to left to plate St. Hilaire. Barber also scored on the play as Cameron Graves over-ran the ball in left-field while Lamarche scored when Flynn singled to center. The throw home on the Flynn hit sailed up the line allowing the UWF catcher to advance to second. Taye Larry followed with a walk and scored with Flynn when Andrew Rodriguez tripled to right. A squeeze bunt by Dustin Saulmon plated Rodriguez for the final West Florida run of the frame.
The Argonauts added another run in the third inning on a Flynn base hit before taking advantage of a pair of VSU errors in the sixth to score two more.
VSU starter Nick Fogarty took the loss as he surrendered five hits and seven run in just an inning and a third on the mound as he fell to 2-1. Jake Stephens gave up just two hits and one walk, but faced the minimum in sevening innings to improve to 6-3.
With the loss, Valdosta State will await word as to whether or not the Blazers will advance to the NCAA South Region Tournament.
