Fire crews have contained a five-acre brush fire that has damaged or destroyed several homes and outbuildings in the Northern California town of Fairfield.

The blaze that broke out Friday afternoon prompted evacuations as it sent huge plumes of black smoke billowing into the air.

The Contra Costa Times reports that fire officials said one home and six outbuildings were destroyed and two other homes were heavily damaged.

Firefighters fought the blaze from both land and air, and CalFire assisted by doing airdrops and used a bulldozer to create fire breaks.

As the fire spread, weekend traffic on both I-680 and I-80 ground to a halt. The fire was contained by 8 p.m. One firefighter suffered a minor injury.

Fairfield is about 40 miles northeast of San Francisco.
