APOLLO BEACH, Fla. (AP) --

People aren't the only ones in Florida who don't like the cold weather.

Manatees -- which are giant aquatic mammals -- crowd the waters
near power plants in Florida when the temperature drops. Power
plant discharge water is much warmer than Gulf or Atlantic water.

On Tuesday, Dec. 28 more than 300 manatees lolled in the water near
Tampa Electric's Big Bend Power Station in Apollo Beach. Wendy
Anastasiou, an environmental specialist at the manatee viewing
center there, says manatees congregate there when Gulf water is 68
degrees or colder.
