Sopchoppy resident Stephen Porter, DOB 12/14/64 was turkey hunting in the Apalachicola National Forest off Forest Road 321 in Wakulla County with two friends when one of his fellow hunters mistakenly shot him.

Porter was hit in the upper body with 10-15 pellets, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) investigators, and taken to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital and admitted. Porter’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Investigators said Roy Carlton Hooks, DOB 2/23/43, of Sopchoppy thought he was shooting at a turkey when he shot Porter.

Yesterday, April 21, was the final day of the 2013 Florida spring turkey season. The hunting accident remains under investigation.
