Stranded Whale Likely to Die

St. Augustine, FL - June 2, 2012

Biologists say a whale that stranded on a northeast Florida beach will likely die, despite efforts to save it.

A kayaker spotted the pygmy sperm whale circling near a St. Augustine creek Friday night.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission biologist Nadia J. Gordon tells the St. Augustine Record (http://bit.ly/Lj2ArW ) that many pygmy sperm whale strandings are caused by a heart condition.

Last year, there were four such strandings in northeast Florida.

The whale was lifted from the water to a truck for medical care. Gordon said the whale would be sedated and it would likely die.

A necropsy would be performed after the marine mammal dies.
