ATHENS, Ga. (AP) -- Researchers at the University of Georgia have received a grant for their work in genetically "fingerprinting" loggerhead sea turtles.

UGA says the $1.3 million grant will allow its researchers to continue their work with the threatened turtles in Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina.

The DNA fingerprinting allows the researchers to identify mother turtles and their offspring. That helps them determine how well the loggerhead populations are rebounding after decades of decline.

The project has been in place in Georgia since 2008. The grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will allow the researchers to continue their sampling work for another three years.

The research also includes partners at the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.
