Tallahassee Museum
Visit the Tallahassee Museum’s new “African Americans in World War II” exhibit on display in the Phipps Gallery July 1 through September 30!

The exhibit displays 40 photographs of how life was for men and women during the most widespread war in human history. Over 2.5 million African Americans served in all branches of service, and in all theaters of operations during World War II. Despite extensive discrimination and segregation, they met the challenge, persevered and served with distinction and honor. Many black infantrymen were involved in the war in Europe and the war in the Pacific. In addition, black support of war efforts from the home front was important to the success of allied forces. Whatever Floats Your Boat Regatta

Date(s): 10/3/2015

12pm-3pm

FSU Coastal & Marine Laboratory, 3618 Coastal Highway 98, St. Teresa, Florida, 32358
It’s time once again for you to challenge your friends, your family, and your colleagues to build boats out of stuff that any normal person would take to the dump and enter them in the Whatever Floats Your Boat Regatta at the Florida State University Coastal and Marine Laboratory. Boats can be as artistic or as ugly as you want to make them. Just build ‘em and they will float . . . more or less.

You landlubbers will be busy ashore cheering on the captains and crews of these outrageously constructed vessels as they sail, row, or scull around the course, topple over, or slowly sink into Apalachee Bay. Watch the Regatta from various shoreline vantage points around the lab on either side of the boat basin. Enjoy good food, have loads of fun, all while learning about recycling and how to reduce the impact of plastics in our marine environments.

"Press the Chest" CPR 2015

Date(s): 6/27/2015

10 a.m. - Noon

Donald L. Tucker Civic CenterTallahassee, Fl
If your loved one collapsed in front of you from sudden cardiac arrest, would you know what to do? Each year in the U.S. EMS treats nearly 400,000 people who suffer sudden cardiac arrest at home, at work, or in public locations. Providing CPR and an AED (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Automated External Defibrillator) to an adult who has collapsed from cardiac arrest can more than double that person’s chance of survival.

In Leon County, only 20% of cardiac arrest victims receive CPR from bystanders prior to EMS arrival. That’s only one in five people. Without immediate, effective CPR from a bystander, a person’s chance of surviving sudden cardiac arrest decreases up to 10 percent per minute.

Join Leon County EMS for “Press the Chest” CPR 2015, a free community-wide CPR training event. Participants will learn “Hands-Only CPR” as well as AED use and choking techniques. This is not a certification event.

Each participant will receive an American Heart Association personal “CPR Anytime” kit which contains a CPR manikin, DVD, and educational materials and supplies. These kits are for the participant to keep and they are encouraged to train family and friends.

Challenger Learning Center of Tallahassee, 200 S Duval St Tallahassee, FL
For the first time in movie history, audiences will truly see and feel what it was like when dinosaurs ruled the Earth.

Recent discoveries and a breakthrough in technology will introduce new and unique dinosaurs that are more real than ever before and put moviegoers in the middle of a thrilling prehistoric adventure, where an underdog dinosaur triumphs against all odds to become a hero for the ages.

Our main characters are a herd of large, frilled, plant eating dinosaurs – Pachyrhinosaurus. The film follows their youngsters through the seasons and the challenges of growing up and establishing themselves in this prehistoric world. From the moment they hatch, they face predators, extremes of weather and natural disaster as they fight for survival.
Walking with Dinosaurs: Prehistoric Planet 3D is an immersive 3D experience – the characters are animated throughout against real backgrounds. It’s the most authentic dinosaur experience ever to be seen on the giant screen. The animals’ bodies and movements have been precisely built up from fossil evidence and their behavior is derived from both paleontology and detailed knowledge of the behavior of modern animals. Even their body language has been inspired by what we know of real animal behavior and gives these creatures an amazing realism.

February 20, 2015-February 20, 2016

200 S Duval St Tallahassee, FL 32301
Starting Friday, February 20 at the Challenger Learning Center of Tallahassee, experience an extraordinary journey into the hidden world of nature’s most awe-inspiring marine mammal. Humpback Whales takes audiences to Alaska, Hawaii and the Kingdom of Tonga for a close-up look at how these whales communicate, sing, feed, play and take care of their young. Captured for the first time with IMAX® 3D cameras, and found in every ocean on Earth, humpbacks were nearly driven to extinction 50 years ago, but today are making a steady recovery. Join a team of researchers as they unlock the secrets of the humpback and find out what makes humpbacks the most acrobatic of all whales, why only the males sing, and why these intelligent 50-foot, 48-ton animals migrate more than 6,000 miles every year.

Humpback Whales is produced and distributed by MacGillivray Freeman Films and presented by Pacific Life. A One World One Ocean production, Humpback Whales is directed by two-time Academy Award®-nominated filmmaker Greg MacGillivray (The Living Sea, Dolphins) and produced by Shaun MacGillivray (To The Arctic, Journey to the South Pacific). Filmed in 15/70mm, Humpback Whales is written and edited by Stephen Judson (Everest, Journey to the South Pacific). The musical score is by Steve Wood (Journey to the South Pacific, To The Arctic).

December 19, 2014-December 19, 2015

Challenger Learning Center of Tallahassee
Starting on Friday, December 19, experience an adventure of giant proportions at the Challenger Learning Center. "Tiny Giants 3D" reveals the astonishing lives of the smallest of animals on the big screen.

Using the incredibly immersive power of specialist 3D cameras, audiences are transported in a very intimate way into another world to experience the titanic battles these creatures face to survive.

A chipmunk in a wild wood and a grasshopper mouse in Arizona’s scorched deserts are both forced to grow up fast when they find themselves alone for the first time. Only by using their ingenious superpowers can our heroes not only stay alive, but also become masters of their universe.

The Syrup City Players will open their 2014 Season with Ernest Thompson’s ‘On Golden Pond’, directed by Jeff Lovett, on Friday-Sunday, March 28-30th at the Zebulon Theater in Downtown Cairo. This is one of the funniest and most heartwarming plays to ever take the stage. The play was also made into a very popular movie in 1981 which won Academy Awards for Henry Fonda and Katherine Fonda. ‘On Golden Pond’ begins with the arrival of an old, long-married couple to their lakeside cottage where they have summered for 44 years. They are estranged from their only daughter, Chelsea, who comes to the cottage to celebrate her father’s 80th birthday. Chelsea announces that she and her new boyfriend are taking a trip to Europe and ask the old couple to watch the man’s teenaged son why they are gone. Ethel and Norman agree and the experience teaches the old man how to trust and communicate with his daughter. ‘On Golden Pond’ will be presented on Friday, March 28th and Saturday, March 29th at 7:30pm and on Sunday, March 30th at 2:30pm. Advanced tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for Seniors/Students and are on sale at Miss Myrts and Center Drugs in Cairo. All tickets at the door will be $12.

Visitors can experience the festival via horse drawn wagon and carriage rides. Two large beautiful Percheron Horses will pull a large wagon on a one mile ride around the main park drive each evening. Take a leisurely 20 minute ride through the park and sing carols while viewing the millions of lights on display!

To celebrate the park’s award-winning light display, a special kickoff event hosted in conjunction with the Town of White Springs will take place on Friday, December 2, 2011, at 5:30 p.m. The Town of White Springs’ Christmas Parade travels down Main Street and continues through the gates of the Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park. Everyone attending is invited to a free hot dog supper with cookies in the park’s Nelly Bly’s Kitchen. Regular park admission fees are waived for this Grand Opening kickoff event, but a donation of at least one new, unwrapped toy is requested per vehicle which will be used to help local families in need.

On Saturday, December 10, 2011, a children’s ornament-making workshop will be held from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Nature and Heritage Tourism Center. A special one-day-only sale, door prizes and holiday treats will also be available at the park’s Craft Square and Gift Shop.

Park entrance fees for this event will be $2.00 per person. The Festival of Lights is sponsored by the Stephen Foster Citizens Support Organization, the Town of White Springs and its special events committee and made possible by the generous support of numerous local individuals and businesses in the Suwannee Valley Region and has been recognized as a Top 20 Event by the Southeast Tourism Society.
