Date(s): 9/24/2014

5:00pm to 7:30pm

John G. Riley Center/Museum - 419 East Jefferson Street, Tallahassee, FL, 32301
We at the John Gilmore Riley Center/Museum are grateful to have this opportunity to reconnect with you as we prepare to embark on an exciting new program year!

The Annual Membership Meeting will convene on Wednesday, September 24, 2014 from 5:00 to 5:30 p.m. The purpose of this Annual Meeting is to elect members to the Board of Directors and to attend to such other business as may properly be brought before the membership. The meeting is free and open to the public.

The Annual Membership Meeting will be followed by a Membership Retreat & Wine Reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. We want to personally thank all of our members for their continued support of our mission to educate, archive, and illuminate the legacy of Mr. Riley and the Smokey Hollow Community. The event will also feature a live jazz band, an array of delightful wine, cheese and hors devours, and culminate with the unveiling of the new interactive, touch-screen kiosk exhibit that digitally captures the rich history of the Smokey Hollow Community.
Both events will be held at the NEW Riley Visitor Center (adjacent to) the historic Riley House Museum located at 419 East Jefferson Street. Free parking is available in the parking lot at West Pensacola and South Meridian Streets (south side of the Riley House) and there is on-street parking as well (no meter feed after 5 p.m.).

The Board & Staff of the John G. Riley Center/Museum cordially invite you to join them to let us show you how much you are appreciated. We encourage you to bring a non-member to the event and assist in increasing awareness of one of Tallahassee’s greatest cultural gems!

We appreciate your partnership with the John G. Riley Center/Museum, and hope that this is the first step in allowing us to continue working together to preserve a legacy of community action and history in Tallahassee.

SPECIAL ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: In celebration of John Gilmore Riley’s 157th Birthday (September 24, 1857) the occasion will also kick off our annual membership drive. These programs and all of the fun and education that they represent are what make the Riley Museum such a cultural gem and one worth the renewed effort to support. Your tax-deductible contribution of $20 for students/seniors, $30 for individuals, $40 for families, and $100 for contributors will produce meaningful change and sustained outreach to underserved communities.

Thank you for your generous support during the year and we look forward to seeing you on September 24, 2014!

Car Seat Safety Check

Date(s): 9/20/2014

Studstill Firm, LLP, 311 N. Patterson Street, Valdosta, GA 31601
Valdosta, GA ---- On September 20, 2014 the public is invited to attend a free car seat check event sponsored by Studstill Firm, LLP and Safe Kids Lowndes (non-profit organization)

Car Seat Safety Facts:
Unfortunately, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among kids 1 to 19. More than 70% of car seats are not used or installed correctly, and most parents don’t even realize it!

For parents that don’t know how to install a car seat, or who want to find out if their seat is safe, various organizations across the U.S. are hosting free child safety seat check events across the nation on National Seat Check Saturday (Saturday, September 20, 2014). During this free car seat check, trained technicians teach parents how to properly install and use their car seats. By simply learning how to correctly use car seats, parents can reduce their child’s risk of death by as much as 71%.

In Georgia, the law states that children must use at least a booster seat until they are either 8 years old or at least 4 feet, 9 inches tall. This is because children are usually between 8 and 12 years old when the car’s seat belt begins to fit them properly.

National Child Passenger Safety Week (September 14-20) is dedicated to ensuring parents know exactly how to keep little ones safe on the road.

During the week of September 14-20, 2014, events are being held across the country to help parents learn how to protect their children in a car.

The Car Seat Safety Check Event in Valdosta, GA:
The attorneys at the Studstill Firm, LLP and Safe Kids Lowndes are hosting a Car Seat Check event at the Studstill Firm, LLP office in downtown Valdosta, Georgia on Saturday, September 20, 2014. Trained safety seat inspectors will be on hand from 10 am – 12 noon to help parents check to be sure that their seats are the right size for their child and that they are installed safely.

The event on Saturday, September 20th is being held in connection with National Car Seat Check Saturday, and is sponsored by Studstill Firm, LLP and Safe Kids Lowndes, a non-profit group dedicated to reducing childhood injuries and led by the Lowndes County Sheriffs Office. Certified car seat inspectors who are trained to spot problems with car seats and to help parents install them properly will be on site from 10 am – 12 noon. The event is free and open to the public and there will be balloons and activities for children.

Safe Kids Lowndes is the Lowndes County coalition of Safe Kids Worldwide – a global non-profit organization dedicated to preventing and reducing the number of childhood injuries through safety initiatives.

Studstill Firm, LLP injury lawyers are dedicated to helping families move forward after an accident.

100% of all money made at this location goes to the Shand's Children's Hospital in Gainesville. Love's takes no money from this at all.
One of my employee's oldest son receives treatment at Shand's once a month. So, it makes it very special for us to raise money for them.

Dinner at the Square: American Values in the Age of Hyper-Partisanship

Date(s): 1/27/2015

5:30-7:30 PM

St. John’s Episcopal Church 211 N. Monroe St. downtown Tallahassee
Founder and President of the Institute for American Values, a New York City based think tank focused on rebuilding civil society, David Blankenhorn has spent his career thinking creatively and provoking constructive discourse about some of the most important and controversial cultural issues of our time. As we find ourselves increasingly locked down inside ideological camps, David defies categories, crosses boundaries, and offers fresh and compelling thinking where we seem most stuck. Our discussion will be wide-ranging and free-wheeling and will focus not just on problems (like hyper-partisanship) but also on solutions (like how to build stronger communities). Facilitated by his long-time friend and Village Square Board Member Bill Mattox, if you’re tired of thinking inside the box then this one’s for you.

Tickets are $27 each through January 23 (or $50 for a couple), and $35 per ticket after if tickets are still available.

Dinner at the Square: Faith vs. Science

Date(s): 4/21/2015

5:30-7:30 PM

St. John’s Episcopal Church, 211 N. Monroe St. downtown Tallahassee
There are few areas of the culture war with deeper and more consequential divisions than the ongoing clash between faith and science. And just like with our other divisions, we’re having difficulty navigating the complexities of both faith and science without falling into our angry tribes (tribes that diminish either faith or science). Rather than having an ongoing conversation of substance about how to apply our exploding understanding of the world around us to solve problems, our communication descends into name-calling and made-up “facts” that support what we want to believe is true (but isn’t necessarily). People of faith feel attacked and marginalized in a world where rapid scientific and technological advancements seem to outpace our ability to use them wisely. Join us.

We help ‘green the streets’ to raise a little ‘green’ for our injured, orphaned and displaced green space inhabitants”

Rather than throwing away or storing usable but unwanted items, simply donate them to the Cheeps Boutique. All donations are tax deductible, and all proceeds go to the Goose Creek Wildlife Sanctuary. Funds are used to improve the quality of life for sick, displaced and injured native wildlife.

We will be discussing the difference between emotional and physical hunger, how to manage cues/triggers, stress management skill, and tips on how to eat mindfully.

LBH Color Walk
at FSUS in Southwood!

“Every Heart has a story...Every story has the potential to inspire.” LBH plans to give the community of Tallahassee a mega platform to share their story with masses. In the past, LiveBlackHeart has created and participated in events that were focused on bringing awareness to causes such as pancreatic cancer and breast cancer. However, CEO, Calvin Dennis aspires to shed light on all organizations that help those who need it most by involving the entire community of Tallahassee.
Walk For A Cause will encompass all social awareness organizations that involve the medical community. All families and faculty members of FSUS and the Southwood community are encouraged to participate as well as local chapters of IFC, Pan-Hellenic, and NPHC greek-lettered organizations. The aforementioned organizations all have community awareness associations that could be represented at the walk. Each social awareness group usually has a color associated with their brand; breast cancer is pink, AIDS is red, etc. To participate in the walk, event ambassadors will have the option of purchasing a t-shirt, sweatshirt, or hoodie with the color that represents their cause. Participants who purchase a t-shirt will donate $5 to the organization of their choice, $7 for participants who purchase sweatshirts, and $10 dollars for participants who purchase hoodies.
Local businesses and national awareness campaigns will be targeted for sponsorship arrangements. Sponsors will be represented in all print related advertisements, a memorabilia booklet, promotional paraphernalia to be distributed at the walk, and their company’s banner will hang along the fence located inside of the track. All local news media networks will be invited to witness a community come together to raise awareness in the most fashionable way!
