Have a Heart for Horses Southern Comfort Soiree

Date(s): 3/14/2015

5:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Dover Farm, Havana FL
Join us for the 4th annual Have A Heart 4 Horses. This year's theme is "Second Chance Dance." Attendees will be treated to good food, live entertainment and dancing, a silent auction and a special horsemanship demonstration.
There is no shelter or pound for abused, neglected or abandoned horses. There’s no government-funded organization ready to step in and give permanent help to an equine in need.
In the past, people often looked the other way because there was no one to turn to for help. But now they know they can call Triple R Horse Rescue.
Founded in 2009, Triple R (Equine Rescue and Rehabilitation Ranch Inc.) takes in needy horses and gives them a new lease on life, adopting them out to forever homes where they are once again loved or finding them a foster home where they can live out the rest of their lives in peace. Close to 100 horses have come through our program; in 2014 we adopted out 20.
We are an all-volunteer, 501(c)3 non-profit organization that works with law enforcement, animal control and horse lovers in a multi-county region of North Florida and South Georgia. Every dollar raised by Triple R goes directly into the care of our horses, for veterinary services, feed, hay, farrier care and, when possible, training.

Hearing Loops- Community Presentation and Demonstration

Date(s): 2/27/2015

2:00 p.m.

Tallahassee Senior Center, 1400 North Monroe Street, Tallahassee FL
Hearing loops, are technology that work with a person’s hearing aids or cochlear implants. They transmit sound from the public address system directly to a component in a person’s hearing aid called a t-coil. This brings the speaker’s voice right to the listener’s ear and greatly improves speech understanding and reduces listener fatigue. Hearing loops can also be used by a person who doesn’t wear hearing aids with the help of a small headset.
Juliëtte Sterkens, Au.D. , national spokesperson for the Hearing Loss Association of America and advocate for persons with hearing loss will speak about how in many communities hearing loops have been instrumental in getting people back to activities they enjoy. Please join us and bring a friend or family member. We will have refreshments, door prizes and loop demonstrations.

150TH ANNIVERSARY AND 38TH ANNUAL REENACTMENT OF THE BATTLE OF NATURAL BRIDGE

Date(s): 3/7/2015, 3/8/2015

10:00 AM-4:00 PM

7502 Natural Bridge Road Tallahassee, FL 32305
The Department of Environmental Protection’s Natural Bridge Battlefield Historic State Park, in partnership with the Natural Bridge Historical Society, Inc., invites you to the 38th annual reenactment of the Battle of Natural Bridge. The event commemorates the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War battle which took place 12 miles south of Tallahassee. Early on the morning of March 6, 1865, shots rang out in southern Leon County where the St. Marks River temporarily flows underground then reemerges, thus forming a natural bridge; these shots marked the opening skirmish of the Battle of Natural Bridge. Over the course of the day, Union troops, including the 2nd and 99th United States Colored Troops (USCT), attempted to charge over the Natural Bridge. Each charge was repulsed by murderous artillery and small arms fire by the Confederate defenders. By days end, Union forces retreated to the protection of the Federal fleet at St. Marks. Tallahassee became the only Southern Capital east of the Mississippi River not to succumb to military capture by Union Troops during the American Civil War. On Saturday, March 7th, event guests will mingle with civil war reenactors and observe a Confederate-Union skirmish, cavalry demonstrations, artillery shows and medical treatment examples. Sunday, March 8th, will be the official Opening Ceremonies and Dedication, followed by a full-scale reenactment of the Battle of Natural Bridge at 2:30 p.m. Refreshments, including hamburgers, hotdogs, snacks and soft drinks will be available for purchase both days beginning at 12:00 p.m. Parking is available at the park. Park entrance fees will be waived for the event. Donations of $3.00 per person for adults and $1.00 for children under the age of six will be accepted at the event entrance.

Monthly meeting of the Panhandle Archaeological at Tallahasse (PAST)

Date(s): 3/3/2015

7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

B. Calvin Jones Center for Archaeology at the Governor Martin House, 1001 De Soto Park Drive, Tallahassee, FL 32301
Dr. Keith Holland will present a lecture on the National Historic Landmark shipwreck Maple Leaf on March 3. Keith first discovered Maple Leaf in 1984 while researching Northeast Florida's local history at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. This lit a spark which ultimately led to the discovery of one of the most significant Civil War archaeological collections to date.

Currently, he has dedicated his time and efforts toward educating professional archaeologists, historians, and teachers about Maple Leaf's past, present, and prospective future in hopes of enlarging their sphere of knowledge regarding what we can learn from a social context about the common infantryman during the American Civil War. He fervently believes the most valuable public benefit Maple Leaf offers us, is a site that will last for generations and excite students of all ages about studying their past by using the disciplines of their present.

February 20, 2015-February 20, 2016

200 S Duval St Tallahassee, FL 32301
Starting Friday, February 20 at the Challenger Learning Center of Tallahassee, experience an extraordinary journey into the hidden world of nature’s most awe-inspiring marine mammal. Humpback Whales takes audiences to Alaska, Hawaii and the Kingdom of Tonga for a close-up look at how these whales communicate, sing, feed, play and take care of their young. Captured for the first time with IMAX® 3D cameras, and found in every ocean on Earth, humpbacks were nearly driven to extinction 50 years ago, but today are making a steady recovery. Join a team of researchers as they unlock the secrets of the humpback and find out what makes humpbacks the most acrobatic of all whales, why only the males sing, and why these intelligent 50-foot, 48-ton animals migrate more than 6,000 miles every year.

Humpback Whales is produced and distributed by MacGillivray Freeman Films and presented by Pacific Life. A One World One Ocean production, Humpback Whales is directed by two-time Academy Award®-nominated filmmaker Greg MacGillivray (The Living Sea, Dolphins) and produced by Shaun MacGillivray (To The Arctic, Journey to the South Pacific). Filmed in 15/70mm, Humpback Whales is written and edited by Stephen Judson (Everest, Journey to the South Pacific). The musical score is by Steve Wood (Journey to the South Pacific, To The Arctic).

AARP Boomer Academy: "Save Money: Be a Saavy Consumer of Energy"

Tweak up your consumer knowledge of how to live in and operate your home efficiently. Come to this program for a wealth of insider tips. Go home and do a few things. Then get set to pocket some savings.

You've heard about Smart Meters, which allow your utility to collect data about your home's energy consumption pattern.

And you probably know that during Fall 2014, Florida's Public Service Commission voted to radically scale back the conservation goals Florida utilities are required to meet. That may mean fewer incentives offered by your utility - incentives that help you save money while your utility reduces the electric power demand it must meet.

But there's still a lot an individual can do, and many small investments that make sense on a short timeline. And lest we forget, less fossil fuel burned to generate electricity means less air pollution, less mercury in freshwater fish and fewer greenhouse gases emitted. And a better future for Florida and our grandchildren. Sometimes it IS possible to do "good" for the environment while doing "well" financially.
AARP offers a growing seminar series for people 50+ to find engaging, trustworthy and relevant information that will help baby boomers make knowledgeable decisions about what lies ahead.

Boomer Academy is specifically designed for residents 50-69 who want useful information on topics of interest and relevance, as they navigate the 50+ years.
