December 19, 2014-December 19, 2015

Challenger Learning Center of Tallahassee
Starting on Friday, December 19, experience an adventure of giant proportions at the Challenger Learning Center. "Tiny Giants 3D" reveals the astonishing lives of the smallest of animals on the big screen.

Using the incredibly immersive power of specialist 3D cameras, audiences are transported in a very intimate way into another world to experience the titanic battles these creatures face to survive.

A chipmunk in a wild wood and a grasshopper mouse in Arizona’s scorched deserts are both forced to grow up fast when they find themselves alone for the first time. Only by using their ingenious superpowers can our heroes not only stay alive, but also become masters of their universe.

STATE PARK TO CELEBRATE FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS
-State park holiday celebration features more than four million lights-

WHITE SPRINGS – The Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park will host the 20th annual Festival of Lights, displaying more than five million lights throughout the park, Dec. 5-31, 2014. The park will be open each evening until 9 p.m.

Named a Top 20 Event in the Southeastern United States, visitors can enjoy award-winning holiday sights and sounds throughout the park. Unique holiday light displays include majestic oak trees decorated with thousands of lights, an antebellum Museum dressed in full holiday splendor, a gingerbread village, a candy cane forest, the North Pole with Santa’s workshop and much more.

Cousin Thelma Boltin’s Gift Shop will be open everyday from noon until 9 p.m. Complimentary hot cocoa and popcorn are served nightly as the Craft Square comes alive with craft demonstrations, a bonfire, marshmallow roasting and holiday singing for everyone.

Visitors can experience a “flurry” of fun in our winter wonderland! Weather reports predict a chance of snow flurries every evening on the hour and giant snow families have been spotted in the area watching holiday films! Don’t forget to stop by the North Pole to visit with Santa! This year the North Pole has a new location near the Gingerbread Village and will include Santa’s workshop for great ‘Make and Take’ activities!

The Lake City Train Club will have one of the largest portable train structures in North Florida in our auditorium for the Festival! The layout consists of 400 feet of track with 150 vehicles, 50 buildings and 1,000 feet of wire. It is 30 feet long and 20 feet wide with a surface of 600 square feet! The display depicts the years of 1930 to 1965 and most of the town is patterned after Lake City as it was in1949. Truly wonderful craftsmanship and a sight to see!

The entrance fee for this event is $3 per person, children 3 and under are free. The park will be a drive through only on December 24th and closed the evening of December 25th. The Festival of Lights is sponsored by the Stephen Foster Citizens Support Organization, and made possible by the generous support of numerous local individuals and businesses.

Oven Park for the 15th annual Elf Night. With more than 250,000 lights twinkling against the night sky, the park has been transformed into a winter wonderland! Visitors are invited to stroll the grounds on Thursday, Dec. 18, from 5:30-9 p.m.

Elf Night is free to the public. In addition to viewing the decorated house and grounds, citizens can enjoy hot cider, cocoa and cookies. Parents will want to bring cameras to record all the smiles and wonderment on their children’s faces because we've heard Santa might stop by for a visit!

For safety reasons, vehicles will not be allowed to drive through Dorothy B. Oven Park during the event. Public parking will be available next to the park at the Thomasville Road Baptist Church, as well as at the Piedmont Park Alliance Church across the street.

Dinner at the Square: American Values in the Age of Hyper-Partisanship

Date(s): 1/27/2015

5:30-7:30 PM

St. John’s Episcopal Church 211 N. Monroe St. downtown Tallahassee
Founder and President of the Institute for American Values, a New York City based think tank focused on rebuilding civil society, David Blankenhorn has spent his career thinking creatively and provoking constructive discourse about some of the most important and controversial cultural issues of our time. As we find ourselves increasingly locked down inside ideological camps, David defies categories, crosses boundaries, and offers fresh and compelling thinking where we seem most stuck. Our discussion will be wide-ranging and free-wheeling and will focus not just on problems (like hyper-partisanship) but also on solutions (like how to build stronger communities). Facilitated by his long-time friend and Village Square Board Member Bill Mattox, if you’re tired of thinking inside the box then this one’s for you.

Tickets are $27 each through January 23 (or $50 for a couple), and $35 per ticket after if tickets are still available.

Dinner at the Square: Faith vs. Science

Date(s): 4/21/2015

5:30-7:30 PM

St. John’s Episcopal Church, 211 N. Monroe St. downtown Tallahassee
There are few areas of the culture war with deeper and more consequential divisions than the ongoing clash between faith and science. And just like with our other divisions, we’re having difficulty navigating the complexities of both faith and science without falling into our angry tribes (tribes that diminish either faith or science). Rather than having an ongoing conversation of substance about how to apply our exploding understanding of the world around us to solve problems, our communication descends into name-calling and made-up “facts” that support what we want to believe is true (but isn’t necessarily). People of faith feel attacked and marginalized in a world where rapid scientific and technological advancements seem to outpace our ability to use them wisely. Join us.

Speakers:
Harrison Prosper, Ph.D., FSU Department of Physics
Mike McHargue AKA “Science Mike”

Tickets are $27 each through April 17 (or $50 for a couple), and $35 per ticket after if tickets are still available.

Zebulon Theatre 207 N Broad St Cairo, GA 39828
The Syrup City Players will open their 2014 Season with Ernest Thompson’s ‘On Golden Pond’, directed by Jeff Lovett, on Friday-Sunday, March 28-30th at the Zebulon Theater in Downtown Cairo. This is one of the funniest and most heartwarming plays to ever take the stage. The play was also made into a very popular movie in 1981 which won Academy Awards for Henry Fonda and Katherine Fonda. ‘On Golden Pond’ begins with the arrival of an old, long-married couple to their lakeside cottage where they have summered for 44 years. They are estranged from their only daughter, Chelsea, who comes to the cottage to celebrate her father’s 80th birthday. Chelsea announces that she and her new boyfriend are taking a trip to Europe and ask the old couple to watch the man’s teenaged son why they are gone. Ethel and Norman agree and the experience teaches the old man how to trust and communicate with his daughter. ‘On Golden Pond’ will be presented on Friday, March 28th and Saturday, March 29th at 7:30pm and on Sunday, March 30th at 2:30pm. Advanced tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for Seniors/Students and are on sale at Miss Myrts and Center Drugs in Cairo. All tickets at the door will be $12.

Live holiday music will be performed at the Stephen Foster Museum nightly from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. If any school groups, church choirs or other musical groups would like to perform, they should contact Diane Simmons at 386-397-2733 for more information.

Santa will visit the park every evening through December 24th and will make appearances throughout the entire park during the festival.

Visitors can experience the festival via horse drawn wagon and carriage rides. Two large beautiful Percheron Horses will pull a large wagon on a one mile ride around the main park drive each evening. Take a leisurely 20 minute ride through the park and sing carols while viewing the millions of lights on display!

To celebrate the park’s award-winning light display, a special kickoff event hosted in conjunction with the Town of White Springs will take place on Friday, December 2, 2011, at 5:30 p.m. The Town of White Springs’ Christmas Parade travels down Main Street and continues through the gates of the Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park. Everyone attending is invited to a free hot dog supper with cookies in the park’s Nelly Bly’s Kitchen. Regular park admission fees are waived for this Grand Opening kickoff event, but a donation of at least one new, unwrapped toy is requested per vehicle which will be used to help local families in need.

On Saturday, December 10, 2011, a children’s ornament-making workshop will be held from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Nature and Heritage Tourism Center. A special one-day-only sale, door prizes and holiday treats will also be available at the park’s Craft Square and Gift Shop.

Park entrance fees for this event will be $2.00 per person. The Festival of Lights is sponsored by the Stephen Foster Citizens Support Organization, the Town of White Springs and its special events committee and made possible by the generous support of numerous local individuals and businesses in the Suwannee Valley Region and has been recognized as a Top 20 Event by the Southeast Tourism Society.
