GREG MCCRAY BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB GARDEN
Garden Club Clean Up Service Project
The Tallahassee Southside Kiwanis Club is will be helping the Greg McCray Boys and Girls Club’s Garden Club with their Fall clean-up project on Saturday September 7th beginning at 9:00 am until 1:00 pm at the Greg McCray Boys and Girls Club; 306 Laura Lee Avenue 32301. The Garden Club, established by the Damayan Garden Project, at the Greg McCray Boys and Girls Club is working to expand to provide environmental, social, and business development to the participating kids. The Public Health Student Association of Florida State University (PHSA) has partnered with the Boys and Girls Club to help educate youth members of the Boys and Girls Club on healthier diet choices and the long term effects of developing urban gardening. In preparation for the fall planting the Tallahassee Southside Kiwanis Club, PHSA, Boys and Girls Club staff, members, and volunteers, community partners, and local businesses will be helping the Garden Club clean out the existing garden. We are working to procure around 60 volunteers. Any donations of supplies, an outdoor sink, gardening tools, and lumber (to build raised gardening beds) are greatly appreciated.
There are plans in place to work with the youth members to develop the garden to provide fruits and vegetables to the residents of Leon County who live in areas that are deemed food deserts by the Federal Government. Areas that are deemed food deserts are urban neighborhoods or rural towns where the walking and biking distance to access fresh, healthy, and affordable food, fruits, and vegetables is greater than one mile. The benefits to the Leon County residents are substantial and hope many will join the mission in supporting the foundation movement of providing fresh fruits and vegetables to those residents who are in need.
Tallahassee Southside Kiwanis Club is an organization of volunteers dedicated to changing our community one child at a time. Our club was chartered in 2008. Since, we have partnered with many local, state, national, and international organizations and programs whose missions align with ours: to the quality of life for all children; the Greg McCray Boys and Girls Club being one of them.
