Military Robots

Our troops fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan face many dangers everyday. But now there is a new type of soldier on the ground, and it's not human.

About five thousand robots are working alongside U.S. forces. They can find booby-traps and search for the enemy with help from a small camera inside.

Jim Braden of the Joint Robotics Program says, "The trend right now is the infantry and maneuver forces is looking at ‘what can a robot do for me?’"

The robots are supplied, in part, by a company called I-Robot. The company says its product has disarmed almost 10,000 improvised explosive devices. The U.S. military may also soon send robots that can even fire weapons at the press of a button, or transport ammunition or soldiers.
