Even though our area remains in a drought, a couple of tornado records went by the wayside in October.
The National Weather Service says 87 twisters were reported nationwide between October 17 and 19, which sets a new record outbreak for the month. There were a total of 105 tornadoes for the entire month, coming only second to the 117 tornadoes reported in October 2001. Two strong weather systems contributed to the record number of twisters. Records date back to 1950.
