Many of us do not like the taste of beets, but the vegetable may have a valuable use away from the dinner table.
The Ohio Department of Transportation is testing a mixture of beet juice and salt as a way to remove ice and snow from roadways. They say it's more effective than just salt alone and causes less corrosion on bridges and equipment. However, Iowa officials say the beet juice did not offer better results in their state because of brutally cold temperatures. Since sugar-depleted beet juice is a waste product, it won't increase demand for growers.
