An EF-2 tornado packing 111-135 mph winds killed two people near Lake City in Columbia County, Florida this morning. The National Weather Service says the storm hit at about 9:45 this morning and cut a half-mile-long path that was about a quarter-mile wide.
As many as 20 homes suffered significant structural damage including roof failure and the collapse of exterior walls along Northeast Denver Road. Numerous mobile homes were also destroyed.
The National Weather Service in Jacksonville says one fatality was due to a tree falling on a mobile home, on Northeast Gibbs Terrace. Another fatality was due to a power surge.
The tornado touched down as an EF-1 at Northwest Stadium Terrace in West Hillsboro just north of Lake City before strengthening to EF-2 intensity.
