The model, called the Hurricane WRF (pronounced WORF) is a coupled ocean-atmosphere model that will utilize highly-advanced physics in an attempt to better understand the evolution of the potentially destructive storms.

Dr. Richard Pasch, senior hurricane specialist at the National Hurricane Center says, "Intensity: we're still relying on statistical models, but we're developing explicit models, such as the Hurricane WRF, and improvements to the GFDL hurricane model and still improvements to the statistical models, that we think there's hope that intensity predictions will become more accurate."

Despite the somewhat disappointing initial results, hurricane specialists believe the model provides a solid framework to improve intensity forecasts over the next several decades.
