New Depression Forms in the Gulf

The area of disturbed weather in the south-central Gulf of Mexico has become better organized late Tuesday evening. It has now been classified as the season's fifth tropical depression. It is forecast to become Tropical Storm Erin some time on Wednesday, before making landfall in south Texas or northern Mexico Thursday morning.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Dean strengthened to 50-mph. The latest forecast brings Dean to hurricane intensity on Thursday. It will reach the Caribbean Islands this weekend and could become a large and dangerous category 3 hurricane by that time.
