Marianna, FL -- February 15, 2012 --

This is the belly of Dragon's Tooth cave at Florida Caverns State Park.

And these are the first pieces of video ever shot in the cave.

The pristine, untouched piece of nature is being studied in depth for the first time by Darrel Tremaine and his team of researchers. They're hoping to unlock the secrets of weather patterns thousands of years ago.

Darrel Tremaine, Ancient Weather Researcher says, "What we're really trying to do is compare this one to the last one. And the fact that this is a natural cave that's gated, pristine, it's been gaurded for 50 years, we really can't get a better spot than this."

This cave was discovered in the early 70s, and besides from park rangers and a select few, no one is allowed inside.

The team from FSU is working with the State of Florida Parks to partner up and make this research possible.

Brian Kilgore, Undergrad Chemistry Researcher says, "As much as everyone focuses on weather and climate change, it's exciting to be right there at the front of it, looking at what's going on today, taking that and comparing that to the past and telling what is different and what will be different."

Tremaine's group is hoping to keep their equipment deep underground for at least a year, and maybe even two.

In that span, they expect to collect pieces of data and samples of stalagmites that will show us what weather and climate was like on Earth thousands of years ago, and how to protect our planet in the future.

Darrel Tremaine says, "It kills me to have equipment sitting in the lab and not collecting data. So the more time underground we get with that stuff, the better we can understand what's going on."

Brian Kilgore says, "This gives me another window to look through..to see what the world is doing and how it's changing."
