February 2013 Ends Up As Tallahassee's Wettest February on Record

...February 2013 was the wettest February on record for
Tallahassee...

The average monthly temperature for February recorded at the
Tallahassee Regional Airport was 56.0 degrees, or 1.3 degrees
above normal. The highest temperature recorded during the month was
78 degrees on the 23rd. The lowest temperature was 23 degrees on
the 17th which was Tallahassee`s only hard freeze of the winter.
It was also one of only 6 days in February with a minimum
temperature at or below the freezing mark which was normal. There
were no temperature records tied or broken during the month.

Most of February was very dry with only 1.0 inch of rain recorded
in the first 3 weeks. An unsettled weather pattern brought
widespread heavy rains during the last week of the month. Rainfall
amounts during the 5 day period from February 22nd through the
26th were generally 8 to 12 inches across the local Tallahassee
area with 11.36 inches being the official measurement at the
airport. This rain event contributed to making February 2013 the
wettest February on record with total rainfall of 12.36 inches.
The greatest amount in a 24 hour period was 4.75 inches on the
22nd, a new rainfall record for that day. To get an idea of how
dry it had been, that amount was only 0.37 inches less than what
was recorded at the Tallahassee Regional Airport in the previous
12 weeks combined. Another daily rainfall record was set on the
26th with a measured amount of 3.95 inches. There were 13 days
with measurable rainfall during the month which was normal. There
were 5 days with thunder at the airport, 3 above normal. One of
the thunderstorms produced mothball size hail (1/2 inch diameter)
on the 24th. The peak wind for the month was 33 mph from the
northwest on the 16th.

The outlook for March from the Climate Prediction Center calls
for equal chances of experiencing above, below or normal
temperature and rainfall. The average monthly temperature for
March is 60.4 degrees with normal monthly rainfall of 5.95
inches.
