There is help available to the people most vulnerable to the extreme heat.

A Tallahassee Utilities crew was working on a new water main on East Bradford near the intersection of Meridian Road on Friday.

Along with the consistent pounding of the crew's equipment, the mid day sun relentlessly beat down on them.

Mike Keels was working in a hole with consistent sun exposure.

"We keep Gatorade and water on the trucks at all times and then we take breaks in between like when we got the hole dug here today," Keels said.

For Tallahassee's homeless population, living in the elements is part of life.

On days of extreme heat like Friday, the cafeteria at Tallahassee's homeless shelter is opened for people to cool off.

The 70 degrees inside was roughly 30 degrees cooler than outside where a water cooler was set up.

"Making sure people are hydrated have water and inside from the conditions is very important," said Shelter Director Jacob Reiter. "You know when its rainy weather, cold weather and really hot weather, that's when we see our spikes in the population," he said.

Over the course of the summer, Elder Care Services has given away about 300 donated fans.

There's still about 150 fans left to Leon County seniors who may need them.

"Folks are very scared and leery of high utility bills with their air conditioning and they're sitting in their homes sweltering," said Ed Gines of Elder Care Services.

Seniors who'd like a fan can stop by at Elder Care Services at 2518 West Tennessee Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

For more information call 921-5554.

Also the Shelter is asking for donations of toilet paper and hygiene supplies.

They can be dropped off anytime at the kitchen door at the corner of Tennessee and Macomb.

Financial contributions for the Shelter are welcome at P.O. Box 4049, Tallahassee, Florida 32315.
