The Florida Highway Patrol says traffic is now flowing on Interstate 10 near Pensacola.

The road had been closed early Wednesday due to torrential rain that has dumped up to 20 inches in parts of the Florida Panhandle.

Other major roads throughout the Pensacola area, and in neighboring Okaloosa and Santa Rosa counties, remained closed Wednesday morning.

Officials say one person died in Pensacola late Tuesday. Many others were stranded in their cars or had to climb into the attics of their homes to await rescue.

Gov. Rick Scott has declared 26 counties in the Panhandle and north Florida a state of emergency because of the rain.

The National Guard is sending high-wheeled vehicles to assist in rescue efforts.
