Hurricane Proof Your Home

Tallahassee, FL - Experts say a part of preparing for the hurricane season also means making sure your home ready for whatever may blow our way.

Protecting your home and everything and everyone inside is possible, even during a hurricane.

Trenise Lyons, with the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH) says, "If you prepare in advance, make sure that everything is ready. We have a lot of lee time a lot of times when it comes to hurricanes, so we know all the things that we need to do. So, the plan is to start now."

Lyons says hurricane-proofing your home can be done in a flash.

She says you should clean debris out of your gutters because clogged gutters can cause water and structural damage to your home.

Using the gutters at one Tallahassee home as an example, she says, "They're securely fastened to the home, so those won't become projectiles during a storm. Then you can see here that the water is pointed down and it will flow down the driveway away from the home."

Other tips include looking at your roof to make sure you don't have any loose or broken shingles; cutting tree limbs that could fall on your home; and securing or putting away loose items in your yard.

Just from Wednesday night's thunder storm, an umbrella table that was in one back yard ended up in the swimming pool. It could have easily been blown into the home's glass door or windows.

Lyons says you should cover windows with Miami-Dade tested hurricane shutters or coverings.
