Tropical Storm Don Crossing Gulf

[UPDATE] 7-29 - MIAMI (AP) --

Tropical Storm Don is moving closer to southeast Texas as it crosses the central Gulf of Mexico, but it isn't expected to become a hurricane.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami says Don's maximum
sustained winds early Friday are near 50 mph (85 kph) with only
slight strengthening expected before it reaches the coast of Texas
late Friday or early Saturday.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for the Texas coast from
the mouth of the Rio Grande to Matagorda.

Don is centered about 255 miles (395 kilometers) southeast of
Corpus Christi, Texas, and is moving west-northwest near 14 mph (22
kph).

Tropical Storm Don is moving over the central Gulf of Mexico but the system is not expected to become a hurricane as it moves toward southeastern Texas.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami says Don's maximum sustained winds late Thursday were 50 mph (80 kph). Slight strengthening is forecast before the storm makes landfall on the Texas coast late Friday or Saturday. Then it's expected to weaken gradually.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for the Texas coast from the mouth of the Rio Grande to San Luis Pass.

The storm is centered about 370 miles (595 kilometers) southeast of Corpus Christi, Texas, and is moving west-northwest at 14 mph (23 kph). The storm could dump 3 to 5 inches of rain on the area from the central Texas coast west to south-central Texas
