Thailand's prime minister has warned that the worst floods to hit the country in decades are now threatening the capital, Bangkok.

Thailand's prime minister has warned that the worst floods to hit the country in decades are now threatening the capital, Bangkok.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said in a television address late Friday that flooding around the nation has reached a crisis level.

Bangkok has been spared serious damage so far, but some fear it
could be inundated as large amounts of flood water flows from the
north toward the Gulf of Thailand.

That critical runoff is expected to be impeded by high ocean tides in mid-October. Tropical Storm Nalgae is also forecast to bring new rain.

The government said Saturday that 253 people have been killed since late July.
