THOMASVILLE, Ga. (WCTV) -- This week, a giant retailer made a big announcement that will impact around 5,000 jobs across the country.
JCPenney says by June, 138 stores will close it's doors.
One of those stores is in Thomasville, at the Gateway Plaza.
It's one of five stores in Georgia closing.
The store says it's part of a plan to optimize retail operations.
"I was actually pretty shocked," says Veronica Andino, shopper. "I like JCPenney and a bunch of those stores are closing. That's a lot of people that are going to be left without a job, so it's sad."
Tifton is another location preparing to close in South Georgia.
Two stores are also closing in Florida, including one in Jacksonville.
They will also shut down a supply chain facility in Lakeland.
