On Monday night, President Donald Trump announced his nominee to replace Anthony Kennedy on the Supreme Court of the United States; Brett Kavanaugh.
Following his announcement, local politicians responded to Trump's nomination.
Ronna McDaniel, Republican National Committee Chairwoman
"Tonight, President Trump nominated a strong defender of the Constitution and champion of the rule of law to the Supreme Court," said Chairwoman McDaniel. "Judge Brett Kavanaugh has proven his commitment to protecting the rights of all Americans through a distinguished career on the D.C. Circuit and his lasting service to our nation. Judge Kavanaugh is the best choice to succeed Justice Anthony Kennedy and Senate Democrats must put partisan politics aside and vote to confirm him to the Supreme Court."
Florida Senator Marco Rubio (R)
“Brett Kavanaugh is a qualified, mainstream jurist who possesses the right temperament and experience for the position, and I’m pleased to see his nomination to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court.
“My decision on whether to ultimately support Kavanaugh’s nomination will be based on his commitment to original intent, judicial restraint, and the understanding that the Supreme Court is a ‘trier of law’ appellate court and not a ‘trier of fact’ trial court. This is critically important because too many in the federal judicial system today believe it is appropriate for judges to craft new policies and rights instead of interpreting and defending the Constitution as written.
“Regrettably, Senate Democrats made up their minds to oppose this nomination long before tonight’s announcement. I would remind them that just over a year-and-a-half ago the American people elected the president and a Republican-controlled Senate. Nevertheless, I am hopeful for a fair and thorough confirmation process as the Senate carefully examines and deliberates Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court.”
Georgia Senator Johnny Isakson (R)
“I congratulate Judge Kavanaugh, who is a talented and experienced jurist, on his nomination to our nation’s highest court. I firmly believe that justices who understand and apply the law based on the U.S. Constitution, and not on their own personal political views, should fill seats on our Supreme Court. Judge Kavanaugh’s record indicates that he shares a strong commitment to the Constitution and the rule of law. I look forward to meeting with him soon and working with my Senate colleagues and the administration during the confirmation process to ensure that this highly qualified candidate is voted on by the Senate in time for the Court’s next session.”
Florida Representative Neal Dunn (R)
“In announcing Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination for the Supreme Court, President Trump has taken another tangible step to secure the Constitution and ensure that the people of the United States remain preeminent, not the government. This is a victory for everyone who cherishes our nation’s conservative values. I urge the Senate to act quickly and confirm Judge Kavanaugh.”
Florida Republican National Committee
“President Trump made an excellent choice by nominating Judge Brett Kavanaugh to serve on our nation’s highest court. Judge Kavanaugh is an eminently qualified nominee who will undoubtedly decide cases based upon the words of our United States Constitution as written, rather than legislate from the bench. Bill Nelson should put obstructionist politics aside and swiftly confirm President Trump’s nominee.”
I look forward to meeting with Judge Kavanaugh to discuss his views on several issues such as protecting women's rights, guaranteeing access to health care for those with pre-existing conditions & protecting the right to vote, just to name a few. I’ll make my decision after that.— Senator Bill Nelson (@SenBillNelson) July 10, 2018
.@POTUS has again fulfilled his promise to the American people & put forward an outstanding nominee to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. Judge Kavanaugh understands the long-lasting impact SCOTUS decisions have on our country, and I look forward to meeting w/ him soon. #ScotusPick pic.twitter.com/X9E8Sqqywk— David Perdue (@sendavidperdue) July 10, 2018
