VALDOSTA, Ga. (WCTV) -- A Valdosta woman was killed Thursday afternoon when she drove off of the roadway and overturned into a ditch.

According to Georgia State Patrol, the crash happened around 3:25 p.m. on Rocky Ford Road just south of Knights Ferry Road.

The crash report states that 62-year-old Karen Root was driving south on Rocky Ford Road when she traveled onto the west shoulder and drove into a ditch. The vehicle overturned onto the driver's side before striking a tree.

Root was pronounced dead at the scene.

GSP says Root was wearing a seat belt, but troopers suspect alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the crash. Troopers also believe Root may have been distracted by a cell phone.
