Valdosta, GA-----

Last week, a Tifton police officer was killed when another driver struck his motorcycle head on.

This week, the Governor's Office of Highway Safety kicked off its first ever Georgia Motorcycle Awareness Tour.

The goal of the tour is to remind both riders and drivers to keep an eye out for each other.

"This ride is dedicated to him because we want the public to know--Look, we're driving places; we're thinking about other things; but you've got to realize that this is the most important responsibility you have as a driver and that is to be aware of the other vehicles around, especially motorcyclists," said Bob Dallas, Director of the Governor's Office of Highway Safety.

Tour organizers say motorcycle fatal crashes increased 161 percent from 2000 to 2007.

The Awareness Tour will continue on to Savannah and Augusta before ending in Atlanta on Thursday.

So May is Motorcycle Awareness Month. Whooptee Friggin' Doo. Some of the names will change, but expect the same old hollow proclamations, pointless pronouncements and self-serving photo ops ... the same clueless cub reporting confusing "motorcycle awareness" (the cause) with "motorcycle safety" (the commodity) ... and when all the hoopla is history, yet another annualized increase in the number of responsible motorcycle riders left dead and dying on the side of the road, their tickets punched by care-less motorists whose cell phone calls, texting and other discretionary distractions take precedence over paying attention to their driving. And why should we expect otherwise, when the cost of maiming or even killing a biker in America is often no more than what you'll pay to beat a speeding ticket? So May is Motorcycle Awareness Month.
