ATHENS, Ga. --- Georgia junior golfers Harris English and Russell Henley will compete next week in the Western Refining College All-America Classic.
The tournament, which is hosted by the Sun Bowl Association, is slated for Sunday through Tuesday at the par-71, 6,837-yard El Paso Country Club.
English and Henley were invited based on their designations as All-Americans for the 2008-09 season. Henley, who also participated in 2008, was a Second-Team All-American last season, while English was a Third-Team All-American.
Henley leads the Bulldogs with a 71.64 scoring average and English is second with an average of 72.45. Each captured medalist honors at one of Georgia’s fall tournaments.
The field for the Western Refining College All-America Classic includes 32 All-Americans from 2008-09, making it the largest field in the 35-year existence of the event.
Since its inception, the Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic has featured several players from Georgia. Bulldogs who have made an appearance in the event include Chip Beck, Jim Becker, Louis Brown, Nick Cassini, Paul Claxton, Erik Compton, David Denham, Ryan Hybl, Chris Kirk, Kevin Kisner, David Miller, Griff Moody, Michael Morrison, Mark Northey, Bryant Odom, Jeremy Parrott, Peter Persons, Matt Peterson, Richard Scott, Tim Simpson, Brian Slevin, Brendon Todd and Joe Walter. Kirk was the winner of the tournament in 2006.
Many Western Refining College All-America Classic competitors have gone on to pursue successful careers on the PGA Tour. Some of the past champions include Ricky Barnes (2000), Davis Love III (1984), Jerry Pate (1974) and Tiger Woods (1995). Alumni of the tournament have gone on to earn more than $1 billion on the PGA Tour.
In all, 133 colleges and universities have participated in the tournament, raising more than $640,000 in scholarship money for the participating institutions. Each university is awarded a $1,000 scholarship if a golfer from that school competes in the tournament.
