ATHENS, Ga. (AP) -- Georgia sprinter Torrin Lawrence, who won the
400-meter indoor national championship last week, has added a big
honor from the nation's coaches.
The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association has
named Lawrence the national male track athlete of the year.
Lawrence, a sophomore from Jacksonville, Fla., is the first
Georgia athlete to win the honor.
Lawrence won the 400-meter championship in Fayetteville, Ark.,
on Saturday with a time of 45.23 seconds -- the second-fastest time
in an NCAA indoor final.
He won the Southeastern Conference title in the 400 this year
and has a school-record time of 45.03 this season, the fastest time
in the world this year. He also holds the school record in the
200-meter dash.
