Pink slips in Atlanta

ATLANTA, Ga. (AP) Atlanta officials began laying off hundreds
of city workers today as part of the largest job reduction in city
government in six years.
Mayor Shirley Franklin announced the cuts Wednesday as she gave
the city council the gloomy news of an expected $140 million
shortfall. Officials are expected to lay off 441 city workers from
nearly every department by Monday.
The cuts do not include reductions in the number of sworn police
Franklin presented the cuts along with a proposed property tax
increase and a hike in fees to balance the budget, but city council
members are refusing to pass a tax increase.
