VALDOSTA, Ga. – Seven Valdosta State baseball players were named to the
All-Gulf South Conference team in a vote by the league coaches
according to an announcement made by the GSC Office Thursday.
Three of the Blazers were unanimous selections to first-team All-GSC
squad, including designated hitter Daniel Muniz and a pair of pitchers.
Muniz batted .341 for VSU on the season while leading the squad in runs
batted in with 51. The senior hit eight home runs on the year and
scored 29 runs while playing in 48 of 51 games.
Joining Muniz as a unanimous selections were starting pitcher Glen
Lemke and closer Justin Lamb. Lemke tallied a 9-3 record for VSU on the
year, including a 4-1 mark in versus GSC opponents. The junior record a
4.37 earned run average on the year and struck out 64 batters in 70.0
Lamb led the GSC in both earned run average, at 1.49, and saves, with
11. The senior also appeared in a league-high 29 games and earned a 3-1
record while striking out 62 in 54.1 innings of work.
The trio of unanimous selections were joined on the first team by first
baseman Blaine Wilson and starting pitcher Will Thompson. Wilson batted
.293 on the year and tallied 48 RBI while leading Valdosta State with
10 home runs. Thompson earned GSC Pitcher-of-the-Week honors three
times on the year, the most by any player in the conference, while
registering an 8-4 record. The senior registered a 2.25 earned run
average and struck out 57 batters in 68.0 innings.
The final two Blazers, shortstop Jon Koenigsfeld and catcher Chase
Blackwood, earned second-team honors. Koenigsfeld led the Blazers with
a .369 batting average and scored 45 runs while driving in 35.
Blackwood batted .319 while scoring 35 runs and driving in 40. The
junior hit seven home runs on the season and led the GSC in number of
times hit by a pitch with 24.
The Blazers, who earned the GSC East Division No. 1 seed in the
upcoming conference tournament, play West Division No. 4 Harding at
1:00 p.m. on Saturday in USA Stadium.
