Obama Shirt Protest

MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) _ About a dozen people gathered outside a bar in Marietta to object to a T-shirt that shows the cartoon chimp Curious George peeling a banana with "Obama in '08'' printed beneath.

The protesters gathered yesterday outside Mulligan's Food and Spirits, saying the shirts with the slogan about the Democratic presidential candidate are racist. They want the bar's owner, Mike Norman, to stop selling them.

Norman says he began selling the shirts in late April. He says the shirt is not meant to be racist. He says he thinks it's funny because he believes Obama and the cartoon character "look so much alike.''

The Southeast regional director of the Anti-Defamation League, Bill Nigut, issued a statement calling the shirt "an outrageous slur against Barack Obama and all African Americans.''
