Valdosta city leaders say they've been working towards moving the railroad switch yard from busy St. Augustine Road to an area that sees less traffic.
On any given day, drivers can sit at the train for more than 10 minutes at a time. Now, a multi-million dollar project to move the switch-yard has been vetoed by the Governor.
"We were surprised to learn it had been vetoed, we were looking forward, in fact, we had already started talking with CSX transportation officials about the issue that we have and the possible funding that would be allocated to the city," says city engineer Von Shipman.
Von Shipman says the city is looking into alternatives, possibly a signal to let drivers and emergency response vehicles know early on that a train is coming. They can then choose to detour.
