VALDOSTA, Ga. – Two Valdosta State baseball players have been named to the Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association All-South Central Region Team while a third has been honored as a member of the ABCA South Central Region Gold Glove squad in a vote of the South Central Region coaches as announced by the ABCA on Thursday.
Blazer closer Justin Lamb earned first-team honors after compiling a 4-2 record and 11 saves during the 2008 season. Lamb appeared in a school record 32 games during the season and owned a team-best 1.84 earned run average as he allowed just 12 earned runs in 58.2 innings pitched. The senior owned a 10.43 strikeouts per nine inning ratio as he fanned 68 batters on the year and held opponents to a .233 batting average. By being named to the All-Region first squad, Lamb advances for All-America consideration in a vote of all Division II coaches.
VSU designated hitter Daniel Muniz also earned All-Region honors after being named to the South Central’s second-team squad. Muniz, also a senior, was second on the Valdosta State squad with a .347 batting average while leading the Blazer team with 53 runs batted in. He hit eight home runs on the year while adding 10 doubles and one triple among his 61 hits and had a team-high .551 slugging percentage.
Junior catcher Chase Blackwood was VSU’s lone representative on the South Central Gold Glove team after tallying a .990 fielding percentage on the season. Blackwood committed just four errors in 418 chances on the season while batting .309. The Taft, Calif. Native picked off three base runners on the year and threw out 20 of 62 base runners.
