ATLANTA (AP) Documents obtained by the Atlanta
Journal-Constitution showed that the state Department of Education
knew last July that thousands of sixth-and-seventh graders were
headed toward failing a mandatory social studies test.
Seventy to 80 percent failed to pass the test and 40 percent of
eighth graders failed to pass a math test.
