Veterans, their families, and community members gathered at the Sunset Cemetery in Thomas County to remember service men and women who've made the ultimate sacrifice.

The American flag hung at half mast while hundreds of smaller stars and stripes graced the side of gravestones, all symbols of the most important promise many soldiers have made.

"Never leave and never forget a soldier, and the ones of us who are still here part of our duty is not to forget and that's why we come out," said Major Larry Owen.

A helmet, gun, and boots worn during the invasion of Iraq stood at the feet of local veterans who demonstrated and explained the folding of the flag and what it means to those who've served.
