ROBERTA, Ga. (AP) Crawford County officials are expressing regret over the death of county manager Candy Jones, who died of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The 43-year-old Jones was found dead Friday in her Taylor County home, hours after Crawford County officials asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to look into possible financial irregularities.
Jones and her two assistants had been suspended with pay earlier
in the week.
Sheriff Kerry Dunaway says the investigation into county finances began last Monday after commissioner Frank Hollis approached him.
Dunaway says the investigation will continue.
Commission chairman Eddie Still read a prepared statement Monday
expressing officials' "deepest regret at the untimely death.''
The GBI also is looking into Jones' death.
