Lowndes County Sheriff's Office Captain J.D. Yeager says all patrol officers are advised to park for one hour during their shift to save on fuel.

He says keeping a patrol car in a neighborhood may also deter crime and save on gas.

Yeager says the department is looking into a system where some citizen complaints are responded to via telephone or email to save on gas.

"It is affecting everybody. It's affected our entire budget county wide, city wide, state wide, and until we can see a difference in the cost of fuel, we're going try to continue to try to take measures to cut it," says Captain Yeager.

The Sheriff's Office says the department's take home vehicle policy will remain the same for now.
