Unwanted car tires are not only unsightly, but can also become a breeding ground for snakes and mosquitoes.

In an effort to keep Georgia beautiful and everyone safe, Decatur County residents are urged to participate in a Tire Amnesty this week.

Residents can discard old or unwanted tires at the Decatur County Fairgrounds, free of charge.

Local officials hope the event is just as successful as last year, where 210 tons of tires were collected!

"We have problems with snakes and mosquitoes and they pretty much just bad so we're helping people get rid of them somehow in Southwest Georgia we have a real talent for collecting scrap tires and this is the time to get rid of them," says Suzanne Brandt, Keep Decatur County Beautiful Director.

Tires will be collected until Friday July 27th and can be dropped off at the Decatur County Fairgrounds from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm Monday through Friday.

They will then be recycled and reused in an environmentally friendly way.
