Melanie Perritt is enjoying her family vacation at Wild Adventures.
She says, the family drove from Pensacola, Florida, and they chose this location because it is closer to home.
"I need to get the best bang for my buck," Perritt says. "I'm getting everything I'm gonna get at Disney right here. But I'm saving money, I'm gonna spend more money here."
She's not alone, Lowndes County Recreation officials say as gas prices go up, so does the number of people vacationing locally.
Eric Hahn, Interim Director for the Valdosta-Lowndes Parks & Recreation says, "We have some increases in our programs and in our park reservations."
There are plenty of options for those who want to get away from it all, yet stay close to home. They range from the outdoor to the indoor to the extreme.
Jimmy Holmes, Vice President of Marketing & Sales for Wild Adventures says, "Gas prices have affected everybody so I think people are looking for less expensive alternatives for entertainment."
While many are making cheaper vacation plans- some say they're simply going to deal with it.
Billy Folsom says, "I have to buy the gas, its not like I have a choice"
But Perritt says she made the choice of Wild Adventures over Disney World, and still feels she's getting a quality vacation.
