Winthrop Park’s 12U All Star won an 8-7 thriller over Madison County Saturday Morning in Jacksonville Beach to clinch the North State Cal Ripken championship. Winthrop advances to the Southeast Regional tournament in Atlanta later this month.
Hard hitting Madison jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first two innings but Winthrop stormed back in the bottom of the second with Jake Sisk starting a rally that racked up 7 runs on 6 hits and 3 Madison errors. Key to the scoring, were a pair of 2 RBI singles by Marshall Moyle and Wynne Casteel.
After a scoreless third and thanks to a heads up double play by Casteel and Drew Biegalski on a popped up bunt Madison chipped away with 2 more runs in the fourth on 2 hits, one a homer by Zach Money. Winthrop added an insurance run in the fifth when a fast footed Conner Giles walked to open the home half, then scored from first following an overthrow on Caleb Sandon’s single.
Madison came to bat trailing 8-5 in the top of the sixth determined not to go down without a fight. Patrick Bowen homered and Cullen Gudz scored to pull within one run with the bases loaded and 2 outs. Madison’s attempt to score on a passed ball ended with a game ending tag by Casteel.
Bowden Francis was credited as the winning pitcher but the pitching story was Casteels two and two-thirds innings of relief, allowing 2 earned runs on 5 hits and fielding his position well.
Offensively, Casteel and Moyle led Winthrop each with 2 hits, 2 RBI’s and a run scored. Biegalski, Trey Melvin, Jake Sisk, Max Mayne and Vergara added an RBI.
