The Spirit of DC is the first plug in hybrid electric vehicle to come and drive around the streets of Tallahassee.
A conventional hybrid gets all its power from gasoline, while a plug-in hybrid uses electricity for seventy to eighty cents per gallon compared to four dollars a gallon for gasoline.
Jerry Asher handles east coast relations for the Spirit of DC.
"So we need to transform not only the supply of oil, but the demand for it and if we can go into electricity as much as possible we can be energy independent."
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles are not yet commercially available and while you will save hundreds on gas it will cost a pretty penny to switch over and have a completely energy independent vehicle.
