Two recent Georgia riders, Kate Stewart and Nichole Grant, will represent Georgia at the prestigious National Collegiate Reining Championship, held this Saturday at the National Reining Horse Association Derby Finals in Oklahoma City.
Stewart has been selected to ride in the elite competition for three straight years while Grant will be making her first appearance at the event. Riders may automatically qualify for the Derby by turning in one of the top four scores at the Varsity Equestrian National Championships or the IHSA finals. The remaining four riders are selected by national nominations reviewed by a board.
Stewart, a native of Dawson, Ga., co-captained the 2009 national champion Bulldog squad as a senior. She turned in an outstanding dual-meet record in her final season and also participated in the individual Reining competition at the Varsity Nationals last April. Grant, from Elverson, Pa., also performed superbly during Georgia’s 2009 season, her second in Athens after transferring from Penn State.
“Both Kate and Nichole have been wonderful representatives of Georgia during their careers,” Georgia coach Meghan Boenig said. “I have no doubt that they have the confidence to perform well against the nation’s best collegiate reiners. They’ve been working hard to prepare for the Derby, and I look forward to seeing them have success in Oklahoma City.”
