A school for Special Education students in Hamilton County, Florida may soon close.

The Hamilton County School Board put the Greenwood School in Jasper on the chopping block because of dwindling enrollment and fluctuating staff. Enrollment is down to only 22 students.

Hamilton County Superintendent Martha Butler says closing the school could relieve the district of $100,000 of its projected $424,000 deficit for the 2012-2013 school year.

If it closes, the students will be moved to fully-equipped classrooms in Central Hamilton Elementary School and Hamilton County High School respectively according to their ages; both are in Jasper.

Greenwood's students range between Pre-K age to high school senior level.

Superintendent Butler says the new classrooms may actually be an improvement for the students. She continues to say the situation may actually afford them more opportunities to interact with students who do not require Special Education which can be a healthy part of growing up.

The prospect of whether or not to close the school will be discussed in the next School Board meeting on Monday and a decision may be made on the spot.

That meeting is Monday at five pm at the Hamilton County School Board room in Jasper.
