The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says Ray Ponder of Grady County was found dead Wednesday night, 300 yards from his home. GBI tells us Ponder's son and grandson discovered his body around 8:30 that night and then called a local funeral home. The funeral home then called 911, Grady County Sheriff's Office responded to that call. Based on what they found at the scene, they then asked for GBI's assistance.
"Right now it's just a death investigation and we're gonna let the autopsy, as well as what we found at the scene...see if it is consistent and then we can answer those questions," says Steven Turner, GBI Special Agent in Charge.
While they wouldn't tell us what they found, they did confirm that there were multiple gun shot wounds.
Turner also says, "We know that we have wounds on the body that are consistent with a gun shot and the autopsy is scheduled for today in Atlanta. And we'll have to use that autopsy report to try to answer some possible questions that we have based on what was at the scene."
We have contacted the Grady County Sheriff's Office and are waiting to hear back from them.
We'll keep you updated on the information as it becomes available.
