Lowndes County, GA- January 5, 2012

The family of a Lowndes County man who was shot to death is speaking out. Joshua Commander was shot around 2PM on Friday. He later died at South Georgia Medical Center.

His step son Jacob Dunbar said "He was a great man and he did not deserve to die. He was a hero."

The accused shooter is David Harrelson. Neighbors in the 7400 block of Union Road say that Harrelson had a history of playing loud music at all hours of the night.

On Friday afternoon he was blowing his air horn on his front porch, according to the neighbors. All that they wanted was for him to stop.

Jacob said "I walked right over here, right over there and I asked please stop honking the horn. My step dad has really bad PTSD and it scares him and the dogs just start barking and that makes it worse."

That's when Joshua, who served two tours in Iraq, went over to the house. Although he had served his country he wasn't done protecting those he cared about.

Joshua's widow Amy Commander spoke with Eyewitness News reporter Eames Yates. She said "Josh was here in front of him but the guy was holding the gun out this way." Eames asked "towards you?" Amy said yes and that "he stepped in front of it. And then I heard the pow."

Harrelson was later arrested by the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office and charged with murder. Joshua was taken to the South Georgia Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.

A family friend Lauren Bibin said "he had a heart of solid gold and was a great man. And did not deserve to end his life in this tragic way."
