Associated Press Release

ATLANTA (AP) -- Utility crews are descending beneath downtown Atlanta in an effort to find out what caused an underground explosion that shot manhole covers into the air.

Witnesses reported that several manhole covers downtown were launched at least six feet around 7 p.m. Monday night. No injuries were reported.

WSB-TV reports that Georgia Power crews Tuesday morning were trying to cut power to some buildings so workers can reach an underground vault in an effort to determine what caused the explosion.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the blast temporarily shut down Peachtree Street between Mitchell and Alabama streets and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive between Pryor and Spring streets. All of the streets had reopened by Tuesday morning.
