Valdosta, GA - January 9, 2013- In the wake of the deadly school shootings in Newtown, one Georgia lawmaker is proposing a bill to allow principals to carry concealed weapons. But not everyone is on board.

Geneasha McFarland is a parent of a Lowndes County School student. She said "I don't think that would be a good idea for the principals and assistant principals to carry guns because when emotions start you just don't know what's happening, you usually shoot first and ask later."

Lowndes County School Superintendent Wes Taylor was the principal of Lowndes High School for nine years. He believes that having at least one member of law enforcement at a school is the answer.

He said "we believe that is the best deterent in the event that one of those situations were to occur in our community."

Lowndes high sits on about 75 acres and has more than 3,000 students. School Resource Officers have an office in Lowndes high School and are provided by the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office. After the shootings in Newtown Connecticut they increased their numbers from 3 to 4 full time employees.

The Sheriff's Office isn't stopping there. They plan to have at least one school resource officer in every single school in the county by the end of this year.

Sergeant Mike Adams of the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office said "if I hear bang bang bang I have to be running to that noise and when I get there I have to neutralize that noise."

The bill to allow principals to carry guns is being introduced by Republican state representative Paul Battles. It's expected to be debated when the General Assembly begins next week.
