Republican Rep. Jack Kingston will face Democrat Lesli Rae Messinger in the Nov. 6 general election for southeast Georgia's 1st Congressional District. Both are from Savannah.
Messinger, a 56-year-old businesswoman, defeated Nathan Russo, a St. Simons Island retiree, in Tuesday's Democratic primary. Unofficial returns showed Messinger with 55 percent of the vote to 45 percent for Russo with 79 percent of precincts reporting.
Kingston did not have primary opposition. The 57-year-old congressman is seeking his 11th term.
Georgia lawmakers redrew the district this year to include all of Savannah, including more Democratic precincts. Nonetheless, Kingston is a favorite heading into the fall campaign.
Besides Savannah, the district includes the rest of Georgia's coastal counties and extends inland to Valdosta.
