Lowndes County, Georgia -
On Tuesday, June 26 the property owner of 6798 Caitlin Drive went to his property where he encountered two persons who were removing items from the residence. The property was recently damaged by fire and the victim has lived elsewhere while awaiting the repair of the home. The two unknown offenders fled the area in a vehicle but the property owner provided a vehicle description to the 9-1-1 center who relayed the information to the responding deputies. A short time later, a deputy spotted the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop but both occupants of the vehicle abandoned the car and fled on foot. After a short foot chase, the deputy apprehended Marcus Maddox who initially provided a false name. Efforts to locate the second suspect were unsuccessful.
Through investigation it was confirmed that Marcus Maddox was involved in the burglary and was also a registered sex offender in Florida. Maddox had absconded from authorities in Florida and moved to Georgia without registering.
According to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Marcus Maddox was convicted of Lewd or lascivious molestation in Clay County, Florida in 2010. Since that conviction, Marcus Maddox fled Florida and has failed to update his registration as required by law.
Marcus Maddox has been charged with Burglary, Giving a false name, Failure to register in addition to a number of traffic charges. He remains in the Lowndes County Jail while awaiting an arraignment hearing where a bond will be considered. Maddox is also being held for Clay County, Florida for charges related to his failure to register there.
This investigation is on-going and efforts are being made to identify the second person involved.
