Thomasville, GA- Thomasville police say the incident unfolded shortly after 7 a.m. on Wednesday.
Loretha Threadcraft was opening her daycare center, Tender Loving Care, when her ex-husband, Leonard Threadcraft, came after her with a gun
Police say that's when Loretha, desperate for help, ran across the street to the Southwest Georgia Dialysis Facility.
"She went inside, barricaded herself into a restroom. He then fired two shots into the area of the restroom door," said Lt. Eric Hampton with the Thomasville Police Department.
Loretha was not hit by either bullet, but that didn't stop Leonard from continuing his rampage.
"At that time, he exited the building, where he fatally shot himself," said Hampton.
Police have not yet said what type of firearm was used or where on the body the 40-year-old shot himself.
They say no-one inside the facility or daycare center was injured.
As news of the incident broke out, friends and family of the former couple gathered at the daycare center, trying to make sense of it all.
They say the two recently finalized a divorce, but that they never saw this coming.
"He was a spiritual leader," said Dante Johnson, a friend of both Leonard and Loretha. "He was a good friend, active in the community."
Police are looking to see if there were any previous reports of violence between the two that could have led to this tragic outcome.
